Why Are You in Business?

Nail Your Big Why

As I walk clients through my 5 Week Strategy Practicum, the first session focuses on the importance of identifying the motivating force behind your thoughts and actions: “What is your big WHY?”  Before you can build any real momentum for your business or non profit, you must be able to answer three simple questions about your product, service or idea:

  1. Why does it matter to you?
  2. Why should it matter to anyone else?
  3. Why should it matter to the world?

Why Does it Matter to You?

Whether they recognize it or not, most business owners and entrepreneurs have an underlying narrative or story behind why they got into business in the first place.  It typically reflects their values, beliefs and perspectives, and is often born out of a significant life experience.

For instance – at face value – the business of Melody Belotte Media offers guidance and insight on marketing, strategy and personal development.  However, the underlying message of WHY I offer those services is based on a strong belief that every person should experience “Less overwhelm. More time for what matters.”  At an early age, I nearly lost my life, and ever since, I’ve been crazy about making the most out of every single day and inspiring other people to do the same.  It’s the big WHY of my life and my business.

After I discovered this underlying theme, it was easy to see why the topics of time management, work life balance and strategic planning were so central to my brand message.

Still unsure what your “WHY” is? Use the fill in the blank statements below for a little clue.

  • Nothing makes me more frustrated than when: ______________________.
  • Nothing makes me happier than when: _______________________________.

For inspiration, here’s how I complete those statements:

  • Nothing makes me more frustrated than when I see wasted time, resources or potential.
  • Nothing makes me happier than when I spend time on the people and projects that matter most.

Once you can understand and articulate what drives you as an individual, it becomes that much easier to communicate what drives your business and why it should matter to others and to the world.
